Artist statement for Hello 你好嘛? (Hello Nei Hou Ma?) exhibition at Articulate Project Space, Sydney.
Based on the moon as a historic symbol of time, belonging, and home, this work explores the
displaced homesickness that I feel as an Australian national towards Hong Kong. Examining the
idea of ‘false nostalgia’ and inspired by my mother’s memories of Hong Kong before her
immigration [in 1989], the installation reproduces motifs of Hong Kong domesticity and urbanism in the late
20th century and the colour temperature closest to moonlight [4000K].
